Herbs for Allergies and Asthma
by Steven W. Schlussel

Herbs are used in the symptomatic and long term treatment of both Asthma and Allergies in various healing modalities. Looking at Asthma first, a number of herbs provide quick relief by opening up the bronchi. Ma Huang, or Ephedra Sinica, a Bronchial Dilator, is commonly diffused as a tea and will provide almost immediate relief to asthmatic symptoms. The herb is contraindicated for high blood pressure, prostatitis, glaucoma and insomnia. Long term use may adversely effect the adrenals and therefor should only be used for occasional symptomatic relief. The FDA has now banned Ephedra sales in the United States due to a number of deaths due to its misuse. It is stilled used widely in China and elsewhere. Long term herbal treatment of Asthma include the herbs Licorice, Lobelia, Grindelia, Yarrow, Turmeric, Green Tea and Ginger combined with Rose Hips or another quality source of Vitamin C. A formulation of the above works prophylactically to reduce the frequency and severity of asthma attacks. It is thought that the increase in Asthma in our society is directly related to increased air and water pollution, exposure to chemical solvents and the increase of allergic reactions in general.

An increase in allergic reactions corresponds to these exposures as well as a diet of processed foods, meats that are derived from animals given hormones and antibiotics, as well as the decrease in the breast feeding of babies, a trend which started in the 1950’s. Hidden food allergies, especially to dairy and wheat can trigger allergic reactions of many types. As with Asthma, herbs can mitigate both the long and short term effects. Osha Root (Ligusticum porteri) is an excellent herb for treating allergies as well as viral infections and many lung ailments. It promotes perspiration and the elimination of toxins. Nettles (Urtica dioica) is an excellent tonic herb that helps reduce food sensitivities. In addition to being a nutritive, it works as an expectorant and a respiratory, kidney and overall tonic. Licorice (Glycyrrhia glabra) is another nutritive herb used for allergies. It is an antispasmodic, antitussive, anti-viral and an expectorant and demulcent. It nourishes the adrenal glands and soothes the mucous membranes. Avoid for people with rapid heartbeat, on digoxin drugs and for prolonged use if you have high blood pressure. Quercetin is a bioflavonoid which is derived from various herbs and foods. It has the ability to stabilize cell membranes, preventing histamines and leukotrines from entering the bloodstream. It is not water soluble, so the body has a hard time absorbing it in the form of supplements. By combining it with Bromelain, an enzyme derived from pineapple, which as similar allergy fighting properties, absorption is increased and performance is enhanced.
